Self-catering accomodation in Devon.

Merricks Organic Farm near Langport in the heart of Somerset is run by Simon and Jane Brooke. They provide organically grown vegetables, fruit, herbs and home reared Angus beef together with laying hens and Guinea fowl.

Their aim is to grow and supply top quality seasonal organic produce at a reasonable price to a local population from a sustainable method of production.

Simon and Jane Brooke bought Merricks Organic Farm in 1992 having both decided to have a career change and relocate from London to the South Somerset levels. Without any previous farming experience, apart from an allotment in Epsom, there followed a steep two year learning curve in how to grow organic fruit and vegetables.

The farm is small, totaling just 30 acres and licensed by the Soil Association. 5 acres are devoted to fruit and vegetables. The additional land is used to run a small herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle, a flock of laying hens and for occasionally raising Christmas geese and Guinea Fowl.

With the aid of four large polytunnels and a greenhouse over 115 different varieties of fruit and vegetables are produced. Apart from occasional surpluses all the produce is used in the seasonal box scheme which supplies around 100 local families between June and February each season.

Their aim is to grow and supply top quality seasonal organic produce at a reasonable price to a local population from a sustainable method of production.

There are many good box schemes across the country but two areas that might distinguish Simon and Jane's are its freshness and traceability. For freshness all vegetables are harvested on the morning of packing which means that, apart from winter stored items such as onions, all the produce is less than 24 hours old on delivery. As to traceability their aim is to produce everything on the farm so that the customer can have total confidence as to where the produce has come from and the standards to which it has been produced. This philosophy extends to Jane raising all the farm's transplants on site. This year they anticipate that all the box contents will have been grown on the farm.

Merricks Organic Farm is a small local producer, it’s drop off points are within small local shops. The farm is a member of the local Somerset Organic Link wholesale group. The farm has a small farm shop stocked only with produce grown or made on the farm. The farm regularly hosts farm walks to local clubs. Farm customers receive a weekly newsletter, an annual farm walk and know they are welcome anytime to come and have a look around.

A small converted barn on the farm lane, looking out over fields and woodland. The cottage is a spacious but basic three star cosy cottage sleeping 2 people, quietly situated at the bottom of a long private farm lane overlooking fields and hills. Briefly comprising a compact bedroom with antique double bed and ensuite shower bathroom, open plan kitchen, living and dining room. The kitchen is fully fitted having a fridge freezer, microwave,oven and hob. The living room has a television, radio/C.D. player, a swaps library together with lots of magazines and board games in the big dresser. Heating is provided by a wood burner (the farm is self sufficient in wood) and electric radiators.

The cottage is a no smoking zone. One well behaved dog is welcome subject to prior arrangements.

Eggs, vegetables, fruit and meat are available from the farm. Should you wish, an evening meal can be provided in the cottage. Our organic farm covers 28 acres, of which 9 acres is devoted to fruit and vegetables. We have created a large pond and planted traditional hedgerows, cider apple orchards and woodland.

Situated on the edge of the somerset levels just outside the historic town of Langport, there are plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing and bird watching. Several national trust properties and famous private gardens are also close by.
