Organic Food Producers and Home Delivery Service.

Arthur Street Trading Co. Ltd has been operating as a workers' co-operative in Hull since 1999 and provides a home delivery service for organic fruit, vegetables, groceries, beer, wines and household goods in Hull and surrounding villages.

We are committed to finding and promoting organically grown food and, where ever possible, we source our products locally. In this way we support independent business's and strive to keep food miles to a minimum. Within Hull we make our deliveries in our solar-powered milkfloat, thus reducing our environmental impact.

We also produce a range of fresh Organic Hummus, made by hand in our kitchens. We sell it via our delivery service, to local shops and to other organic food suppliers across the north of England.

Arthur Street Trading Company Ltd was established in West Hull in the mid-1990s . A workers' co-operative, Arthur Street's roots stretch back into the 1980s. Spurred on by the lack of good healthy local food and inspired by another workers' co-operative, Giroscope Ltd., which provides affordable housing throughout West Hull, Arthur Street's predecessor, the People's Trading Company, (PEEPS), was formed. Trading from an old corner shop on Wellsted St., PEEPS provided fresh vegetarian and ethically-traded convenience foods from 1993 to1998. PEEPS came to a close in 1998 but a short time later some of those involved joined with other like-minded people to form the Arthur Street Trading Company Ltd based at new premises at the rear of 23 Arthur St.

Arthur Street was set up in order to provide affordable, high quality organic foods. Sourcing organic fruit, vegetables, beers, wines, wholefoods and other groceries from local growers and national suppliers, we have provided an award winning box scheme throughout Hull and surrounding towns and villages since 1999. We feature foods that are free of artificial preservatives, colours, flavours, sweeteners, and hydrogenated fats.

From our Arthur Street kitchens we also supply our own homemade organic hummus, available in three varieties: plain, kalamata olive and sundried tomato. As a supplier to Suma Wholefoods, our hummus can now be purchased from health-food stores all over the UK.

Today, as consumers we all have a better understanding of the link between the environment and the food on our table. By sourcing many of our goods locally, we cut down on food miles, and use a solar-powered milk float, originally donated by Northern Dairies, to make our weekly citywide deliveries. We re-use all our veg. boxes helping us to keep packaging to a minimum and are continually looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.

Because local produce is subject to seasonal and regional variations, we cannot adhere to a strict "only local" policy. Similarly there are some now everyday food items that cannot be grown in Britain, such as oranges, grapes, avocados, and we have to look overseas to ensure we meet our customers' requirements. Buying organic means we support environmentally-friendly farming in other parts of the world.
