Barley Wood Walled Garden

...restored Victorian kitchen gardens.
For more than 25 years the gardens were lost to brambles and neglect, but after careful restoration they are now home to an award winning organic producer, a homely cafe and a thriving community of talented artists.
Our gardens are free to the public and open all year round with free visitor parking (see opening times). Whether browsing the artist studios for the perfect gift or sampling home cooking at the glasshouse cafe, you'll always enjoy stunning views over the Mendips.
The Beautiful Barley Wood Walled Garden is a carefully restored Victorian kitchen garden run by Wrington Greens.
A huge array of vegetables are grown within the walls of the garden as well as an incredible variety of fruiting and flowering plants. Old fashioned espaliers and cordon fruit trees grow up the walls, blossoming in spring to create a lacy blur against the warm brick. The warm and sheltered glasshouses are full of tiny seedlings and, in the summer, tomatoes with their wonderfully evocative smell and gorgeous colours fill the glasshouse.
Walk through the main arch and down an old brick path and you will come across a lily pond teaming with life. Further down the path are the herbaceous borders packed with beautiful flowers. In the summer these borders are a rainbow of breathtaking colours, flowers of all kinds attract butterflies and bees from the neighbouring beehives. This is arguably the most beautiful part of the garden with stunning views across Wrington Vale and the Mendip Hills.
The gardens are open to the public every day. Please contact Wrington Greens for more information on group tours as well as school and educational visits.
The Kitchen Garden at Barley Wood dates from 1901 and was constructed for Henry Herbert Wills, director of the Imperial Tobacco Company. Although this was at the end of the Victorian period, the design was typical of earlier Victorian gardens.
