The Organic Farm Shop, Pickering

Producer of a wide range of organic produce.

We provide one of the widest selections of organic produce in Yorkshire including home-grown vegetables, fruit, meat and eggs, even toiletries, from our farm and shop in Pickering.

Our test shows you can save 12% on supermarket prices for organic produce by buying from us, AND if you live in Scarborough, Pickering or Malton, we'll deliver your order for free.

Our shop is open Monday through Saturday. visiting us is probably the only way to really appreciate the range of organic stock we carry.

Don't forget to check what's in season (it's cheaper, fresher, tastier, and healthier) and what's new .. you never know, you might find something you like.

People new to our shop are often surprised by the range of items we stock, from the obvious fruit and veg through meat, dairy, bread and home baking .. even ice cream and toiletries, shampoos and soaps.

Almost everyone we speak to thinks of organic food as being expensive. We think that's mainly because supermarkets know they can charge a premium. When we grow our own and deliver it for free, it means we can provide good, wholesome food at excellent prices. Delivery also means you saved the time and fuel you'd otherwise spend shopping.

Also .. we've all been in the situation in a supermarket where we want one item, a lemon or courgette for example, and been forced to buy three because that's how they are packed. We'll sell you, as far as possible, exactly what you want. No waste, no extra cost, and just a compostable paper bag for packaging. One chilli? One chilli it is. 100g mushrooms? No problem.

We grow 10 acres of organic vegetables at our farm: potatoes, kohl rabi, cabbages, broccoli, swedes, brussel sprouts, cauliflowers, curly kale, broad beans, runner beans, beetroot, spinach, swiss chard, courgettes, marrows, squashes, leeks and jerusalem artichokes.

Our carrots and parsnips come from a farm 600 feet up on the Yorkshire Moors where it's very windy. The main pest of carrots is carrot fly, and if it's windy, the fly can't land to lay its eggs.

For us, the first rule for anything we stock is that it must be organic. But the Organic and the Fair Trade movements share a desire to do the right thing so it's quite common to find produce that's both organic and Fair Trade. That makes us doubly happy.

Growing organic means that we do not use any artificial fertiliser, insecticides, herbicides or fungicides. Instead we rely on feeding the soil with compost made from our own farm produced manure, green manures (such as rye) and natural minerals (such as rock phosphate).

Pests and diseases are kept under control by using a proper rotation, encouraging natural predators and the occasional use of biological control.

We started growing Organic in 1982 because we had become concerned at the direction being taken by British Farming whereby EC Policy supprted growing more and more food at any cost to the countryside, farm animals and environment.

Many people are becoming concerned about chemical residues and GMO's in food (particularly in vegetables and salads) and also about the damage caused to the environment by chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides.

Organic methods do not harm the environment and they produce food free from residues - guaranteed GMO free.
