Low Sizergh Barn

The real taste of the country.
Welcome to Low Sizergh Barn where we have a farm shop, tea room, craft gallery and farm trail on our organic dairy farm near the Lake District national park. The farm shop is filled with one of the best selections of local and speciality foods in Cumbria, with farm products -- our own organic Kendal cheese, organic eggs and ice cream made from our milk -- taking pride of place.
There are two galleries of crafts and gifts, one in the shippons where the cows once lived, and a tea room with an unusual view -- you can watch the cows being milked every afternoon.
Walk on the farm trail, part of the Soil Associations Organic Farms Network and enjoy the beautiful countryside around the farm.
The nooks and crannies of the 18th century Westmorland stone barn reveal surprises at every turn. The shelves are bursting with options for every meal; choose for everyday, for special occasions, for experimenting and sharing.
Growing Well, a social enterprise based on the farm, grows a huge variety of organic vegetables that are delivered to the shop by wheelbarrow - at matter of farm yards rather than food miles!
We won the national 2005 Retail Cheese Awards and are justly proud of the 60 or so cheeses in the cheese counter, all made by artisan producers and small dairies throughout the UK.
The meat, poultry and game is from nearby farms and estates, with jams and chutneys made from Cumbrian hedgerow fruits.
There are pickles and preserves, puddings and pies, all with that special taste that comes from being made by people who care about the good food they make.
The day starts early on the farm, but the kitchen is busy too, baking all the cakes, scones, quiches and pies that appear on the menu. The dishes of the day make good use of the products on the shelves of the farm shop, so you can be sure the sausage is good Cumberland sausage, the lamb from the farm down the road, and the soup made from scratch with vegetables that arrive daily.
The tea and coffee are worth knowing about too both from a Kendal merchant, the tea is blended to suit local water, and the filter coffee fairtrade.
Every afternoon the farms cows come in to be milked and the tea rooms large windows provide a birds eye view of the whole event.
Beneath the barn are the original shippons where the animals once lived in winter. The gnarled beams and slate dividers (called boskins) are still in place, but now they are filled with the work of local potters and artists, along with glass, wrought iron, baskets and rugs.
A feast for the soul!
Upstairs on the way to the tea room the gallery tempts you with everything from birthday cards and handmade paper to toys and natural skincare. There is a surprising range of knitwear and clothing made from wool, linen, silk and cotton in soft, easy tones -- comfortable to wear and enjoyable to put together.
